“ Songs For A New World ” presents life as the way we regroup and figure out how to survive in a new set of circumstances – a new world – even against seemingly overwhelming odds. These are songs about that new world, a world in which the definitions of family, distance, money, technology, the very nature of human contact is changing everyday, a world in which the rules don’t apply as often as they do, a world in which the solutions our parents found don’t work for us, and a world in which today’s answers probably won’t apply tomorrow.
“ Songs For A New World ” is a brainchild of Tony-Award winning American Musical Theater lyricist and composer Jason Robert Brown. He has been hailed as “one of Broadway’s smartest and most sophisticated songwriters since Stephen Sondheim” (Philadelphia Inquirer); and The New York Times actually refers to Jason as "a leading member of a new generation of composers who embody high hopes for the American musical”.
Jason Robert Brown’s musical theater hits include “Parade” (1998 Tony Awards - Best Score; Drama Desk Award - Best Music); “The Last Five Years” (2002 Drama Desk Awards for Best Music and Best Lyrics, and nominated for Outstanding Orchestrations); “Urban Cowboy” (2003 Tony-Award Nominee for Best Original Score); “Wearing Someone Else’s Clothes” (2005), Brown’s solo debut album; and the latest, “13”, which opened in Broadway in 2008.
Robbie Guevara, a noted theatre actor and director; co-founder, and Artistic Director of 9 Works Theatrical will direct anew this musical after a successful one-night run last August 24, 2008. While originally written as a musical with a montage of songs or a ‘musical revue’, Robbie will have a different take on this material by weaving the songs together in order to come up with a story.

SYNOPSIS
(Songs For A New World is originally written as a musical with a montage of songs or a musical revue, but 9 Works Theatrical’s director, Robbie Guevara, had a different take on this material by weaving the songs together in order to come up with a story.)
Unlike previous versions produced around the world (and the way it's originally written for that matter), our take on Songs For A New World involves related characters:
Veronica starts THE NEW WORLD, singing about her married life. David and Lisa then run in and we hear David sing about his married life and how meeting his previous love-interest, Amy, now affects him. Lisa joins in echoing how her marriage to David is not quite what she expected, while Amy sings about her former relationship with the man who left her pregnant.
Murray now joins Veronica, and we see how their married life is as well. He brings us ON THE DECK OF A SPANISH SAILING SHIP, where we learn of his troubles, both at work and at home.
Veronica comes in, threatening to take JUST ONE STEP off the terrace of their New York City Penthouse while Murray is inside still troubled with his responsibilities.
Amy sings I'M NOT AFRAID OF ANYTHING while David is lounging about in her home. We find out why The River Won't Flow for him, Sam Torres as well as Veronica, Amy and Lisa.
Ironically it is Amy who sings the FIRST TRANSITION to where we hear Lisa asking for the STARS AND THE MOON from various suitors, ending disappointedly with David, who can't stand it when SHE CRIES constantly.

Act One ends with us listening to Sam "STEAM TRAIN" Torres' success story as a Basketball Star -- joined in by his mother, a fan and two of his agents.
Act Two starts with how THE WORLD WAS DANCING for Amy, David, Lisa, Murray and Veronica.
Next we are brought to the North Pole where Mrs. Claus sings her displeasure with her husband in SURABAYA SANTA -- a look of things to come as we next witness the Steam Train incarcerated for allegedly selling a game. He laments he is the KING OF THE WORLD and how he doesn't belong in jail. Amy on the other hand has accepted being a single mother and is prepared to be the best she can be in CHRISTMAS LULLABY.
Murray and Veronica are reunited as they proclaim I’D GIVE IT ALL FOR YOU to each other.
THE SECOND TRANSITION shows David in a military funeral -- his. His now widowed wife, Lisa, mourns his death and copes as she empathizes as a FLAGMAKER.
Although he was acquitted, the Steam Train is now FLYING HOME after his unresolved death. His mother, his number one fan and his agents attend his funeral.
THE FINAL TRANSITION reminds us of the characters whose lives we have just witnessed, until they all invite us and each other to HEAR MY SONG, where we see Amy encouraging her son Sam to the basketball try-outs; Lisa sings to her baby while the memory of David lingers behind.
