Hockey Hits & More: How To Play Ice Hockey
Hockey is a very exciting, but otherwise bruising sport, especially ice hockey. The game is played all over Europe, North America, especially in the US, Canada, Finland, Russia, Latvia, Czech Republic, France, Slovakia and more. Here are a few helpful tips on how to play ice hockey, as well a show to avoid nasty and painful hockey hits.
Ice Hockey Basics
Ice hockey is generally played on a large, flat area of ice, and players use a 76.2 mm rubber disc called a "puck". The vulcanized rubber puck is usually frozen before being played in high-level games, to reduce the amount of bouncing and friction in the ice. A typical ice hockey game is played by two teams, consisting of five players each, and players use an L-shaped ice hockey stick. This stick can be made from graphite, wood or composites, and it is fitted with a blade at the bottom, which can lie flat when the stick is carried by the player in an upright position.
Common Ice Hockey Hits & Moves that you can easily Learn
Ice hockey may, initially, look like a bruising and lawless sport. The sport however has a lot of rules, which players must abide. While ice hockey may be a truly physical contact sport, certain movements or actions are not allowed, and any player who violates the rules is given a penalty by the referee. Here are simple ice hockey hits and moves that you can learn.
- Forehand Passing. To do forehand passing, both hands should move in the direction of your target, and you must not swing your stick in an arc, as you will inadvertently release the puck. Always keep your stick in contact with the puck, and do not slap the puck as you pass it, since a pass must be done without making any sound. Forehand passing is much like maneuvering in a straight line, in the direction of your target. Your stick should follow straight through the line. But if you whip your stick in an arc, the puck could stray away from your stick.
-Backhand Passing. To make a backhand ice hockey hit, make sure both hands move in the direction of your target, and your stick must travel in the direction of your target as you pass the puck.
- Stick Handling. In effective hockey stick handling, the blade of the stick cups the puck. A player needs to know how to perform forehand and backhand passing so that he can effectively handle stick, and make sharp ice hockey hits and passes.
Professional ice hockey's governing world body is nternational Ice Hockey Federation, or IIHF. Men's ice hockey has played in the Olympic Games since 1924, and women's ice hockey was recently added to the 1998 Winter Games. The world's most popular ice hockey league is the National Hockey League (NHL) in North America. The NHL draws top players from all over the world, and NHL rules are quite different from the rules that govern Olympic ice hockey.
